The fishing town of Buckie in the North East of Scotland has been keeping one of Scottish Golf's best kept secrets for many a year - its links style course. Slightly elevated above the sea, it boasts superlative views across the Moray Firth towards the hills of Caithness.
Built on sand, Buckpool has fast, rolling fairways, often lined by tall mature gorse bushes. Swailes and hollows are littered around the approaches to slick undulating greens, so precious some are protected by cavernous bunkers.
Buckpool is a raised links course just on the west side of the fishing town of Buckie on the Moray Coast. The course's history is interesting in that it was created as a work scheme for the great number of unemployed in the 1930s.
For a course of this quality some of today's multi-millionaire course designers would be shaking in their soft-spikes if such schemes were resurrected. With wind and gorse aplenty this is a challenging and satisfying venue. It was also the scene of former Open champion Paul Lawrie's first professional win back in 1986.
